Nixon Math Morning Breakfast a Success!
On January 29th, we held our annual Math Morning Breakfast at Nixon Elementary School. Families were invited to join their children for math games and activities revolving around each of the five Standards for Mathematical Practice (Iowa Common Core). Each game focused on a skill students are engaged in learning throughout their year in math class. Each station had a primary and intermediate grade game, preschool and AK also included a set of games for their students, the computer lab hosted a list of math practice websites, and of course breakfast for the families in the gym.
This year we ran the morning differently than in the past. Instead of having families rotate through stations, we let them select which games and activities to participate in based on the interest of their children. Each family was given a specific breakfast timeslot to grab a healthy breakfast (we called this our Brain Break Pass), but the remainder of the morning was theirs to explore math concepts together as a family. The Nixon PTA helped to sponsor the healthy breakfast of fruit, cereal bars, and fruit smoothies, and teachers and volunteers manned the stations.
Thank you to all of the families, teachers, and volunteers who helped to make this years’ Math Morning Breakfast a huge success!
